CLOSED: Cocktails & light bites at Las Chicas Locas, 7/15/09

Will I save you the trip or inspire you to go?

Check out my initial feedback from Las Chicas Locas, Chelsea’s newest Mexican restaurant located at the base of the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel on 25th Street (between 6th and 7th Avenues).

Strange spot for a Mexican restaurant to open, don’t you think? Is it affiliated with the hotel?

  • While LCL’s location is off-the-beaten-path, there isn’t another Mexican joint in the immediate vicinity (unless you count Chipotle).  The restaurant has no affiliation with the hotel.

What’s the space like?

  • Weather permitting; guests can drink/dine al fresco on the large outdoor patio overlooking 25th Street. If that isn’t your cup of tea, there are plenty of tables indoors, as well.  The restaurant’s interior space is dimly lit, modern, sexy and urban.

How was the service?

  • Honestly? It was pretty slow and inconsistent; however, the employees could not have been nicer. Hopefully this is just a temporary glitch.

How were the drinks?

  • I have a problem paying $15 for a margarita, even if it is made with Patron. I hope that LCL adds some less expensive versions of this popular cocktail to their menu in the near future.

How was the food?

  • Overall, the food was just OK. The plates were too expensive for the small portions we received. The cheese in the Queso Fundido had an awkwardly congealed texture and was topped with a random dollop of goat cheese. The guacamole looked more yellow than green and reminded me of a watery egg salad (both in taste and texture). While the Carne Asada Tacos looked fresh, delicious and muy authentico, the shredded beef had a mysteriously greasy aftertaste, despite being gristle-free.  Items that shined were: Crisp, warm, buttery and salty tortilla chips; salsa duo; cinnamon & sugar-dusted churros with spicy Mexican hot cocoa (for dipping).

What’s pricing like?

  • While most of the prices on the menus won’t initially shock you, the tiny portions you receive will.
  1. Chips & salsa: $5
  2. Guacamole: $11
  3. Queso Fundido, Chile Rajas, Homemade Tortillas: $9 (Bah! “Homemade Tortillas!?” I think not.)
  4. Carne Asada Tacos: $16 (does not include rice or beans)
  5. Churros: $9 (this is a bit outrageous, no?)

Will you return to LCL?

  • Yes, I will return. I believe that it’s unfair to judge a new restaurant based on one experience. The staff was friendly and helpful and informed me that a new chef began working at LCL last week. Hopefully, this will initiate positive change.
